How to Get Rid of Formosan Termites
If there is a type of termite that one should be most afraid of it is the Formosan termites. As the name implies, the origin of this termite is from Formosa in Taiwan where it got its name. It was transported to different parts of the globe namely Japan, South Africa and the United States. There nickname of this Formosan termite is Super Termite.
Formosan Subterranean Termite
The scientific term for this termite is Coptotermes formosanus. This is the most destructive of all termites. They have the ability to destroy and consume wood at a very fast pace. They can damage a wide variety of structures like boats, trees, and even condominium buildings. Their colony is quite large. A single colony may contain a million individual termites. Imagine those tiny creatures rabidly eating away at your wooden structure. That is why they called the Formosan subterranean termites “Super Termite”.
The territory covered by the colonies can be quite large; it is estimated up to 300 feet of coverage. Since termites usually travel from one place to another, there is a great fear that it can infest many places all over the country. The young colonies mostly live in potted plants, landscape timbers or infested trees that can easily be transported.
Formosan termites may mostly eat wood but they can also eat other cellulose-containing materials like boxes, paper, insulation sheets and copper sheeting.
They generally live underground, hence the term subterranean. They make a tunnel underground to search for food. Their nests are considered the largest out of all the species of termites. Aside from the underground soil, Formosan subterranean termites like to stay in places that has lots of moisture.
There are several baiting systems are now available for termite control. They maybe “Super Termites” but they are not necessarily indestructible.
